Friday Mystery Photo

I did not manage to visit the top of this tower, can’t recall the exact reason, maybe it was already closed, maybe they did not allow tripods, maybe the line was too long, or maybe they wanted too much of my money to go up there. If any of you had a chance to make it to the top I’m sure you had some awesome views, but of what city?

Reynolda Gardens

Yesterday afternoon we went for a short walk to the Reynolda Gardens near Wake Forest University. It was raining on and off all day, somehow we managed to squeeze this walk between and didn’t get rained on, but the rose gardens at Reynolda had some nice water drops on most flowers. I had my camera with me and decided to take some photos of all those flowers…maybe got a bit carried away with it, as you will see in the rest of this post. This is only maybe half of all the photos I took. Enjoy.

Empty cans

We have a nice man made lake in Winston-Salem NC, called Salem Lake. There is a walking/biking trail around it, about 7 miles long and a lot of people use it daily for their exercise. The original damn was getting old and a few years back city decided to replace it with a new damn. It took them about one extra year to replace it than was originally advertised, but it is back now and lake at its full level.

I took this photo couple years ago about one month or so after they drained the lake. The surface was all clay like slimy dirt, and it broke into this shapes, similar to what you see in some deserts after they have rain. Walking on it was very tricky as it was a bit soft and if I applied to much pressure, the clay was giving up and my shoe was going into it, not something I wanted to do. And yeah, those cans grabbed my attention from the trail above the lake, I think that is why I climbed down to the bottom of it, to take this photo.

A few weeks later this whole area was overgrown by wild vegetation and it was like that until they filled it back with water. Those cans might very well still be down there, waiting to be discovered by archeologists a few thousand years from now.

Friday Mystery Photo

All I can say is that I would not mind to have a house in that part of the world and live there full time or at least have an ability to visit it many times each year. You probably know many places like that, this is one of them. But to be specific to this photo, you have to tell us what it is and where it is.

Saturday Update: Great participation on this one, you guys rock! Good suggestions on where it is, but artandkitchen got it right, it is Carmel Mission Basilica in Carmel (California)!

Canyon Way

Driving HW 30 from Portland towards the Hood River and then onto The Dalles is one of the must drives in Oregon. The scenery is unbelievable. Ever changing landscape with multiple views over the Columbia river are spectacular. One of the most remarkable things about this drive is the dramatic change from a rain forest environment on the west side to almost desert like to the east, and this change happens over maybe just 20 miles. You drive through some forests with huge trees and then suddenly they all gone and it is getting really hot, with naked yellow fields burned by the sun. This canyon is midway between the Hood River and The Dalles, great views, especially when you stand there in person.

Morning Traffic

Potomac River is the busy place in early morning hours. Right around Key Bridge pretty much every morning you’d see a lot of rowing. Different teams or clubs. Maybe some are part of the nearby Georgetown University or some other college. They are moving very fast, surprisingly fast. Usually you’d see one team here, and another team there. I saw three separate groups coming from different directions and it appeared that they will be all together, close enough to get them into single frame. This is btw, was taken with 400mm lens, I was far far away from it. You can rent one too from the place like borrow lenses.
